For Icelandair-operated journeys. U.S. accessibility rules, Iceland transit permits and Iceland import permissions have different scopes. Independent planning guidance, not acceptance or border clearance.
Before paying
Prepare flight numbers, operating carriers, dates, species, breed, age, crate measurements and combined weight. Ask for confirmed animal space on every sector and written acceptance linked to the booking. A passenger ticket alone does not establish animal acceptance.
Published airline limits
International hold transport stopped November 1, 2024; Icelandair Cargo animal services are unavailable. Ordinary pets cannot travel in the cabin. Domestic Iceland hold transport allows two crates per aircraft, each up to 50 kg including animals; two same-species animals may share if the crate suitably accommodates both; confirm applicable IATA co-housing conditions. Maximum dimensions: 92 × 64 × 71 cm. The listed inch equivalents differ; confirm measurements. Use hard-plastic, waterproof-bottom crates; folding crates are excluded. Book online under animal transport; published price is ISK 7,500 per crate, non-refundable.
Service dogs: maximum two per passenger, carried free, fitting safely in the lap or footspace. Emotional-support, therapy and in-training animals are excluded. The page requests a training certificate and documents two business days ahead; see the U.S. distinction below. Keflavík service-dog transit is limited to three hours; tourist stopovers are excluded.
Questions that still need an airline answer
The reviewed page gives no separate domestic per-passenger crate allowance, numeric cabin service-dog flight quota, general domestic booking cutoff or muzzle rule. Ask about those, accepted species/breeds, mixed-species carriage on the same flight, minimum age, airport reporting time and aircraft changes. Do not interpret the two-crate aircraft limit as a passenger entitlement or permission to mix species inside a crate.
Use Icelandair customer support. For service dogs, select Medical and disability assistance on the support request page. Request the document list for the complete route and submission confirmation.
Training, behavior and restraint
The Icelandair transportation form asks for the trainer or training organization, task training, rabies and veterinary details, and public-behavior assurances. It requires a harness, leash or tether throughout the airport and aircraft. The handler must control the dog; aggression, disruptive behavior or inappropriate toileting can jeopardize carriage. The form does not itself define an accepted accreditation scheme or establish an owner-training pathway. Ask Icelandair which evidence applies outside U.S. rules.
A form, vest or certificate does not turn a pet into a disability-task-trained dog or guarantee admission. Do not rely on the form’s generic pet-carriage fallback where the actual route does not carry ordinary pets.
U.S. flights: separate documentation rules
For flights to or from the United States, DOT guidance limits airline service-animal documentation to the DOT forms, apart from government animal-transport requirements. A relief attestation may be required for flights of eight hours or more. Psychiatric task-trained dogs qualify; emotional support alone does not. Safety, behavior, accommodation and destination health requirements still apply. Aisles and emergency access must stay clear.
The DOT form instructions linked by Icelandair explicitly allow a handler who trained the dog to enter their own details, without a training certificate. Advance submission may be required up to 48 hours when booked earlier; bookings within 48 hours allow gate submission. Late forms require reasonable accommodation efforts. These rules differ from the airline’s general wording. Ask its disability team to reconcile the applicable process, rather than treating certification or two business days as universal. Government transit/import deadlines remain separate.
Keflavík transit permission is separate
The MAST service-dog transit application is for transit only. Send it to petimport@mast.is at least 48 hours (two business days) before departure; processing is Monday–Friday. Include outbound and return sectors. Airline changes require a new permit if the route changes or departure moves by more than seven days.
Its conditions require current rabies vaccination and recorded veterinary treatment against fleas, lice and ticks 24–120 hours before the flight to Iceland. Staff escort passengers; designated waiting and relief facilities apply. The dog must not leave the airport under a transit permit. Do not substitute a ticket, airline acceptance or a submitted application for approved permission.
Entering Iceland or another country
Entry into Iceland is different from airside transit. MAST’s service-dog home-quarantine guidance describes conditional approval, at least 30 days’ advance application, approved accommodation and a minimum 14-day quarantine. It specifies ADI/IGDF-accredited training programs for this import/home-quarantine pathway. That is not a worldwide airline certification rule or a condition to assume for airside transit.
Separate veterinary certification and MAST review deadlines apply, including sending the endorsed health certificate 5–10 days before import. Consult MAST before planning Iceland entry. For every journey, independently verify departure, destination, transit and return requirements with government authorities. Airline forms do not replace veterinary certificates, import permits or destination arrival notifications.
Crate preparation and welfare
IATA’s traveler guidance recommends confirming the exact flight’s acceptance and choosing a container with natural standing, turning and lying space. Discuss fitness to fly and any medication with the veterinarian; do not make medication decisions from an airline web page.
