Plan animal travel
with Air Transat.

Resolve the route, animal space and paperwork before committing to travel.

Independent planning guidance for Air Transat journeys. This is not an acceptance decision, legal advice or a complete government-entry checklist.

Confirm the whole itinerary

Prepare the operating flights, airports, connections and travel dates, plus each animal’s species, breed or cross, age, measurements and loaded-carrier weight. Ask for written animal-space confirmation, including the return journey. Recheck after a flight or aircraft change.

Air Transat excludes pets in cabin and hold from itineraries containing a codeshare flight. Its codeshare page allows qualifying service dogs with the required documents; coordinate separately with every operating carrier.

Start with the pet webpage’s limits

Book cats/dogs through the Contact Centre at least 24 hours ahead; present them at check-in two hours before departure.

Cabin: 8 kg including a soft carrier, maximum 43 × 24 × 25 cm (L/W/H), under the seat throughout. One animal per passenger; no Club, exit or bulkhead seats.

Checked hold: 45 kg including a rigid carrier, maximum 122 × 81.3 × 89 cm; one animal per crate. Hold connections and pet travel in vacation packages are excluded.

Specified breeds/crosses are restricted; French and American Bulldogs cannot travel in the hold. Other eligible short-nosed hold animals need the airline waiver, a larger crate and four-sided ventilation.

Pets to Britain/Ireland use cargo; cabin/hold options exist from Manchester, Glasgow and Dublin, but not London. One-way-to-Canada restrictions cover Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guyana, Haiti, Morocco, Peru and Türkiye. Guyana’s minimum is four months. U.S.-bound animals with high-risk-country travel in the preceding six months are not accepted.

These are airline statements. Check the linked route and breed lists and have Air Transat resolve the tariff discrepancy below before buying a carrier or ticket.

Reserve first, then complete the pet form

The mandatory Pet Information Form follows the animal-space reservation. Submit one per pet and keep its email confirmation for check-in. The accompanying passenger must be at least 16; the form requires a health certificate and valid rabies-vaccination evidence. If you cannot truthfully complete it, call 1-877-872-6728.

Its age declaration says at least 12 weeks generally and six months to/from the U.S.

The pet webpage instead says six months for U.S.-bound travel.

Ask which age requirement applies to each direction, including Guyana, rather than treating the form’s general statement as an exception.

Published limits do not agree

The linked domestic and international scheduled tariffs give cabin limits of 10 kg and 55 × 35 × 35 cm. They also retain young-litter/shared-crate exceptions in the hold. Those provisions differ from the pet webpage above. Do not assume the larger carrier or shared crate will be accepted.

Both tariffs require comfortable standing, turning and lying space; cabin pets must be fully weaned. A maximum-size carrier can still be too small for the animal.

The domestic tariff excludes connecting flights in its animal-carriage clause. Confirm cabin connections as well as hold arrangements.

Ask the Contact Centre to identify the controlling limits for the actual flight, in writing. No numeric aircraft-wide pet quota, per-passenger hold allowance or temperature threshold was verified in the reviewed sources. Ask separately about aircraft capacity, loading, weather and seasonal restrictions. A one-animal cabin allowance is not an aircraft quota; do not infer permission to mix species.

Obtain the complete price

For its listed Canada–Europe, Middle East and South routes (including Peru), the international scheduled tariff gives prepaid charges of CAD 100 in cabin and CAD 275 in the hold per segment. Service-animal carriage is described as free.

The domestic tariff lists prepaid cabin carriage at CAD 50 per segment and hold carriage at CAD 100.

Ask for the total and currency for every segment, including U.S. flights, taxes, cargo handling and any additional space. Confirm animal-specific change, cancellation and refund terms. The tariff’s airport-payment figures should not be treated as permission to arrive without an animal reservation.

Service dogs: distinguish the route and training

Outside U.S. routes, the accessibility page requires in-person task training by a qualified professional or specialist organization, supporting proof and the airline request form. It asks for 48 hours’ notice generally, seven days to/from the U.S. or UK.

The service-dog form allows training by a specialist person or organization. It asks for proof, dog measurements, current rabies vaccination and an age over six months. Email it at booking to request@airtransat.com and carry a printed copy at each departure. The passenger acknowledges control, sanitary toileting and entry-document responsibilities.

A qualified individual is not the same as unrestricted owner-training acceptance. Ask how your specific training evidence will be assessed on non-U.S. flights. No universal ADI/IGDF-only rule was established. A commercial registration or certificate alone does not establish acceptance.

The page requires handler control, leash and harness. Disruptive behaviour can lead to refusal. Dogs up to 12 kg may use lap or foot space; larger dogs use floor space. Seats and exit rows are excluded. Its service-dog section promises adjacent floor space when needed, while its One Person One Fare section excludes extra seats for service animals.

Resolve the space, any charge and the exact seating arrangement before travel. No general non-U.S. dog count, universal muzzle rule or overall service-dog weight ceiling was verified; 12 kg is a placement threshold, not a stated acceptance maximum.

U.S. flights: resolve notice and form discrepancies

For U.S. flights, the airline page directs the DOT form to request@airtransat.com.

The airline-linked PDF displays a December 2023 expiry.

DOT’s current form displays September 2027 and permits the handler’s own training contact details when they trained the dog; it does not require a training certificate. Emotional-support status alone does not qualify under that form.

Ask the airline to confirm use of the current DOT form instead of relying on the older linked copy.

The U.S. rule permits up to 48 hours’ form notice for earlier bookings, with gate submission for reservations made within 48 hours. Late notice still requires reasonable accommodation efforts without delaying the flight. A relief attestation may be required for a segment scheduled eight hours or longer.

This differs from Air Transat’s published seven-day request. Contact it early; for shorter notice, ask its disability-assistance team to apply the U.S. process. Government animal-entry requirements remain separate.

U.S. rules allow carriers to cap service animals at two per passenger. Arrange space and documentation for each; this does not establish the allowance on a separate non-U.S. sector.

Emotional-support dogs have a separate process

Air Transat offers a separate pre-approved emotional-support-dog process, excluding codeshares and vacation packages. Its webpage says 24 weeks minimum.

The request form instead says over six months. It requires passenger, veterinary and medical/mental-health professional sections, sent to request@airtransat.com at booking and no later than 48 hours before departure, with printed copies for departure airports. Approval must be obtained beforehand.

The dog must demonstrate stay and come at check-in and remain suitable for public settings. Behavioural concerns can lead to pet-carrier travel, subject to fees and availability. Above 12 kg, additional floor space must be bought at least 48 hours ahead.

Ask about the age discrepancy, route-specific deadline, dog count, price and seating. Do not use an emotional-support approval as proof of task-trained service-dog status, entry permission or public-access rights.

Book cargo separately

Air Transat directs cargo enquiries to Expair Cargo, including cats and dogs. Its published phone is +1-866-325-0123. Quotes need origin/destination, weight, dimensions, shipper and consignee information. Cargo facilities may be away from the passenger terminal.

Confirm animal acceptance before arranging shipment, including the crate, breed, temperatures, documents, terminal, handover time, consignee and collection. Ask for all handling and clearance charges. A cargo enquiry is not a confirmed animal booking.

Keep airline approval and entry clearance separate

Check the responsible authority for each origin, destination and transit, including the return journey. Verify identification, vaccination, certificates, permits, arrival points, inspection and any advance notification. This guide does not independently verify a complete country-entry pathway.

For Canada, use the Canada service-dog section to distinguish border treatment from airline recognition. A government recognition category does not determine Air Transat’s training policy. Keep public-access rules separate too.

Record every unresolved question and the airline’s written answer in the journey worksheet. Send personal or medical documents only through the verified airline submission route.
