An independent commercial planning guide from Pets Delivery Expert. We arrange individual, complete pet journeys; we are not British Airways customer support. Confirm airline acceptance, government entry permission and space for the specific movement separately.
1. A pet’s place in the hold needs its own booking
British Airways does not carry ordinary pets in the cabin on any route. Its pet page describes hold transport managed through partners. Genuine assistance dogs have a separate process.
For planning purposes, treat the published partner/cargo route as a distinct arrangement from your passenger ticket. Do not arrive expecting to add the animal as an ordinary checked bag. Ask the booking party for shipment acceptance and handover instructions before committing to a non-refundable itinerary.

2. Use the enquiry route for the starting country
BA directs UK departures to PetAir UK and UK-bound enquiries to IAG Cargo. IAG’s pet page links non-UK origins, including Ireland, to a quotation form. That form passes your details to relevant third-party pet-travel partners; submitting it is an enquiry, not a confirmed reservation.
There is a published channel distinction to resolve: IAG’s wider live-animal page requires an experienced freight forwarder except for pet bookings from North America and the Caribbean, while its pet page offers the partner-referral form for non-UK origins. Ask IAG which channel applies to your departure station. The exception alone does not prove direct booking is available for your itinerary.
IAG’s eBooking guide separately directs pet owners to the pet enquiry process. Do not assume a general cargo booking account or a BA passenger reservation can complete it.

3. Verify every operating sector
IAG says some stations cannot handle live animals and aircraft limits apply. A BA flight number, codeshare ticket or destination on a cargo network map is therefore insufficient evidence of pet acceptance.
Before paying, ask for the actual operator, flight/date, departure and arrival airports, any transit, and acceptance of the pet and loaded crate. Can the animal travel on your flight? Who handles a connection, cancellation or aircraft change? Get each answer recorded with the transport proposal.
Check the current IAG operational alerts as well. The October 1, 2026 update reports route disruption; this guide does not promise availability from a general service description.

4. Confirm the crate and document handover
IAG’s pet guidance requires room to stand and sit upright without touching the roof and to turn comfortably. Have the booking party assess your animal’s measurements, breed, age and actual crate before purchase. See our carrier preparation guide.
For arrivals in Great Britain, GOV.UK distinguishes ordinary-pet cargo from the separate assistance-dog and qualifying private-charter pathways. Check the approved route and the applicable entry process independently of airline acceptance. Northern Ireland has separate guidance.
Do not discard original animal documents because freight is becoming paperless. IAG’s October 1, 2026 notice retains original live-animal documentation and applicable health certificates with the shipment. Ask which originals go with the pet, which copies you keep and who checks them at handover.
IAG also says UK-bound owners will be asked for an indemnity covering costs if arrival checks fail and quarantine is needed. Read the actual form and resolve responsibility for those costs before agreeing.

5. Compare complete transport quotations
The reviewed pet-booking pages do not establish a universal fare for an individual shipment. Request a written total for your route, date and crate, with the currency and one-way or return scope stated.
Check what is included: freight, crate, origin handover, arrival release, veterinary preparation, documents and onward delivery. Ask about exclusions, cancellation terms and extra care or handling if the journey changes. Keep the passenger fare separate when comparing proposals.

6. Assistance dogs use a separate approval process
BA carries qualifying assistance dogs in the cabin without charge on most flights. Eligibility involves task training, behaviour and control; emotional-support status alone does not qualify.
BA recommends registration through its linked Open Doors Organization portal before buying tickets, and booking the dog at least 48 hours before travel. Use the US portal if any flight arrives in or departs from the US; otherwise use the rest-of-world portal. Follow the links on BA’s current assistance page.
For flights covered by US disability rules, a reservation made less than 48 hours before the itinerary’s first originally scheduled departure cannot be subject to advance notice; required DOT forms may instead be provided at the departure gate. If an applicable notice deadline is missed, the airline must still accommodate where reasonable efforts can do so without delaying the flight.

Other operating carriers need their own arrangements; BA’s page includes BA Euroflyer and BA Cityflyer in its stated process. Airline approval does not replace entry clearance.
For UK arrivals, BA normally directs contact with the relevant Animal Reception Centre at least 72 hours ahead for pre-approval. London City is expressly different: no advance ARC contact or pre-approval letter, but UK entry compliance and a BA cabin-acceptance letter remain required. Confirm the exact arrival-airport process.

Arrange an individual journey with Pets Delivery Expert
Start with your route, preferred dates, and your pet’s breed, age and weight. Carrier measurements or existing airline correspondence are helpful if available. Request a route review for an individually assessed, complete transport arrangement.
For brachycephalic dogs, our service is cabin-only, through commercial-flight or private-flight arrangements subject to operator and entry acceptance. BA’s ordinary-pet cabin exclusion is not an exemption we can change, and assistance-dog status is not a workaround.
Questions before you book
Can my small dog or cat travel in the British Airways cabin?
No ordinary pet can use BA’s cabin option, even if it fits under a seat. Qualifying assistance dogs follow a separate approval process.

Does buying my own ticket also book my pet?
No. Obtain a separate confirmed pet arrangement through the appropriate booking party. An enquiry or passenger reservation does not establish shipment acceptance.

Will my pet definitely travel on the same flight as me?
Do not assume that. Ask the pet booking party to confirm the exact operating flight, station capability and crate acceptance before committing to your own itinerary.
