Choose the right service before buying your flight

China Eastern has several distinct arrangements: pets checked into the hold, selected ordinary cabin-pet flights, a separate adjacent-seat cabin product, and disability-related service-dog travel. A passenger ticket alone does not reserve any of these services. Cargo is a separate assessment rather than another name for checked pet baggage.

The website’s general baggage rules direct cabin-pet customers to the China Eastern app’s Special Travel Services → Pets in Cabin area. Use those current product terms and an explicit approval for your flight. A cabin announcement is not a network-wide permission, and ordinary paid extra-seat baggage rules do not authorize a pet seat. General baggage provisions

Ordinary cabin pets: selected flights, with a limited international expansion

China Eastern’s 2025 domestic launch placed pets in a designated economy area, under the seat ahead. The published arrangement allowed one pet per passenger and two per flight, with a handler aged at least 18. Applications were through the app or mini-program at least 24 hours before departure, and the airline recommended arriving two hours early with quarantine and vaccination records. Those launch terms should be rechecked against the current app rules, particularly for international travel. Original launch · July expansion

An official announcement dated 12 August 2026 added Incheon–Qingdao to the cabin-pet service. It explicitly limited this international launch to pets that do not occupy a seat. It also described a domestic network of 38 cities and nearly 660 routes at that time. Neither figure establishes pet space on a particular flight today. Confirm the direction, operating flight, carrier limit, application cutoff and charge for the date you need. International expansion

Adjacent-seat pets: keep the announced limits in their proper scope

China Eastern’s 22 April 2026 announcement introduced a larger cabin-pet option with a maximum combined pet-and-carrier weight of 18 kg and a carrier up to 55 × 35 × 35 cm, length × width × height. It advertised a CNY 1,288 service fee plus the seat fare for the corresponding booking class, booked through 95530.

These are the airline’s announced product figures, not a verified current quote or permission for every domestic flight. Ask for the current eligible flight, seat assignment, carrier construction and fit, species/breed restrictions, deadline, and the separate refund conditions for the service and seat. The August international announcement does not extend this adjacent-seat product to international flights. Adjacent-seat announcement

Checked pets: confirm the aircraft and the actual animal

The dedicated hold policy covers eligible cats and dogs on nonstop China Eastern or Shanghai Airlines-operated flights carrying MU or FM flight numbers. The aircraft needs a suitable oxygen-equipped compartment. The loaded maximum is 32 kg, including the pet, container, food and water; each container holds one animal.

Apply through a ticket office, 95530, the official website, app or mobile website. The English notice gives at least 48 hours’ notice. The Chinese version specifies a domestic application window from seven days to 48 hours before departure. For international/regional travel it requires at least 48 hours. An application is not approval. Bring two printed applications and the original required animal-health documents. The English notice recommends arriving and completing check-in at least 120 minutes before departure. English hold notice · Chinese hold notice

The dedicated notices allow two checked pets per passenger domestically and one internationally/regionally, but the generic baggage page still says one. This is not an aircraft-wide quota. Obtain approval for the actual number of pets.

The kennel and breed need an individual check

Prepare a rigid, escape-resistant, ventilated airline kennel with a secure metal door, absorbent lining and the specified protective net and fastening. The pet must stand, turn and lie naturally. Follow the airline’s packing diagrams rather than relying on a seller’s “airline approved” description.

The published size ceilings conflict: the English hold page excludes containers whose three dimensions total more than 203 cm, while the Chinese page lists larger size bands. Have China Eastern approve your exact external dimensions before purchasing the kennel.

The bilingual hold application excludes pets under six months, pregnant animals and animals that gave birth within the preceding 48 hours. It also excludes snub-nosed cats/dogs, specified aggressive dogs and Samoyeds. The Chinese notice’s broader list includes breeds such as Schnauzers, Yorkshire Terriers and British Shorthair cats. Check the full list and your pet’s precise breed; these hold restrictions must not be presented as the complete cabin-product rules. Hold application · Chinese breed and kennel rules

Fees, weather and changes

Checked pets are charged outside the free baggage allowance. For domestic excess baggage, the published rate is 1.5% of the applicable highest published one-way direct adult economy fare per kilogram; that is not necessarily the fare you paid. The CNY total is rounded to whole yuan. International charges depend on the route and applicable baggage calculations, with local-currency collection. Ask for the animal-specific total; a generic sports-equipment tariff is not a pet quote. Baggage charges

Extreme-weather wording also differs between versions. The common thresholds are −12°C or below and 30°C or above. The Chinese notice/application warn of risk, while the English notice also lists these conditions as grounds for refusal. Do not rely on either guaranteed acceptance or a simplified universal embargo: get a decision for the flight and temperature forecast.

For a booked hold service, contact 95530 at least 48 hours before departure to change or cancel; a changed flight requires a new application. The Chinese notice describes seeking refund or rebooking when extreme weather makes the journey unsafe, but it does not establish a universal fee waiver. Before handover, ask where and how to reclaim your animal at the destination. A universal pet-reclaim location was not verified. Chinese hold rules

U.S.-bound dogs and service dogs

China Eastern’s current pet and service-dog notices both state that dogs are temporarily suspended on U.S.-bound flights. Do not assume that service-dog status creates an exception or that entry documents override the airline restriction. No resumption date was confirmed. Service-dog notice

On eligible services, disability-related guide/hearing-dog arrangements are separate from ordinary pet bookings. The published service allows one service dog per passenger, generally requires application at least 24 hours ahead, and calls for original training/work identification and quarantine records, with additional international paperwork. The dog cannot occupy a passenger seat; the airline’s restraint rules apply. Accepted service dogs and their container/food travel without the ordinary pet charge. Emotional-support status is not treated as trained service-dog status. Service-dog rules · Carriage conditions

If the passenger service will not accept your pet

The hold notice refers oversize or overweight cases to freight channels. This is a referral only: it does not confirm cargo acceptance, a cargo price or a passenger-terminal handover. Obtain a separate assessment before treating cargo as an available option.

For a planned pet journey, provide your departure and destination, dates, breed, age, weight and carrier measurements. Settle the accepted travel mode and the animal-specific approval before committing to non-refundable arrangements.
