PETS DELIVERY EXPERT

Plan pet travel
on Ethiopian Airlines.

Reserve animal space and resolve conflicting published rules before you commit to the journey.

Independent planning guidance, not a booking confirmation or complete government-entry checklist.

1. Reserve the animal, not just your seat

Arrange pets in advance with Ethiopian’s office or your travel agent; provide species and container dimensions. The main pet page gives no universal hourly booking deadline.

Cats/dogs: cabin maximum 55 × 40 × 20 cm and 8 kg including container. Cabin quotas are per compartment: wide-body C9/business 2, economy 4; narrow-body C9/business 1, economy 2. Q400 cabin carriage is listed.

Oversize containers or animals above 8 kg go in the hold; above 45 kg including container requires cargo. Snub-nosed cats and dogs are excluded.

These compartment quotas are not per-passenger entitlements. No reliable whole-aircraft total covering cabin, hold and service dogs, per-passenger pet limit, shared-container allowance, mixed-species permission, hold-container maximum dimensions, minimum age or complete breed list was established in the reviewed sources. Ask specifically; do not infer that two animals may share or that dogs and cats can be booked together.

2. Resolve conflicting limits before paying

The cargo FAQ still gives a 32 kg cargo threshold and cabin quotas of one in business and two in economy, without the main pet page’s aircraft distinction. Its wording also leaves exactly 32 kg unclear. For a borderline weight or a crowded cabin, request written acceptance for the actual operating aircraft. Do not select whichever published limit is more convenient.

Confirm all operating carriers and stops. Codeshare rules belong to the operating carrier; interline carriage needs separate checks. A route’s absence from a restriction list does not prove acceptance.

3. Confirm the complete price

The fee table, effective June 20, 2025 until further notice, lists one-way international cabin carriage at EUR 120 / GBP 110 / USD 150; hold carriage above 8–32 kg at USD 370 and above 32–45 kg at USD 500. Weights include the container. Domestic cabin: USD 100; domestic hold above 8–32 kg: 500% of the applicable excess-baggage rate.

From ADD to US points, the table lists USD 300 cabin / USD 500 hold entries. The hold row says “up to 8 kg”, unlike the general hold bands; do not silently correct it. Domestic hold above 32 kg and under-8-kg oversized kennels lack clear matching price rows. Ask for the exact total, currency, taxes, handling charges, each direction and connection, plus change/cancellation/refund terms.

Pet charges are additional to free baggage allowance. Guide/hearing dogs are listed as free with advance notice. Interline charges may differ. A price is not a space confirmation or a cargo quote.

4. Use the cargo booking process when needed

The cargo FAQ directs passenger-pet enquiries to a ticket/sales office or SpecialCBControl@ethiopianairlines.com. For cargo it requests booking at least three days before travel, with scanned documents, to AmericaCBControlAmerica@ethiopianairlines.com, copying CargoSales@ethiopianairlines.com. Confirm that these contacts handle your origin and route. Changes/cancellations are requested by email more than 24 hours before departure.

Cargo is quoted using the higher of gross and volumetric weight. The Addis Ababa instructions describe payment/formalities the preceding day and delivery three hours before departure; confirm your own terminal and handover time. They are not worldwide passenger check-in deadlines.

The Addis export checklist includes a Ministry of Agriculture veterinary certificate, health certificate, export permit, and import permit or passport. Obtain the destination-specific checklist separately. The reviewed public pages do not establish a shared-kennel or mixed-species cargo policy.

5. Check extra formalities for US-bound dogs

Ethiopian’s June 2025 cargo notice describes air-waybill arrangements for dogs travelling to the US even as cabin pets or excess baggage. It requests documents at least 48 hours before departure through SpecialCBControl@ethiopianairlines.com and, for Addis-origin travel, AllCargoExport@ethiopianairlines.com. Ask how this interacts with the passenger booking and whether any additional handling charge applies.

The dated notice contains a July 2025 cutoff in its government-document instructions. Do not use it as a current US import checklist or assume its stated requirements apply identically to every dog. Its airline handling process and government entry eligibility are separate questions.

6. Arrange service-dog assistance separately

Ethiopian’s pet page describes harnessed, muzzled guide/hearing dogs in the cabin. It also groups emotional-support and psychiatric service animals under a mental-health-professional letter requirement. That wording must not be treated as the current US service-dog definition.

The airline’s US-assistance page asks for 48 hours’ notice and check-in one hour early, accepts verbal assurance or identification about training, and excludes exit rows. Its US request form asks for the reservation, contact details, seating and animal information; it is an assistance request, not a DOT form or confirmed acceptance.

Ask the airline to reconcile its published process with the US rules below, including late bookings and online check-in. No current Ethiopian-specific DOT upload process, universal service-dog count, or accepted-training-organization list was established.

7. Settle floor space, restraint and training evidence

Ethiopian’s 2024 accessibility plan says the dog should fit at the passenger’s feet, with an airline-provided harness attached to the seat belt, and asks passengers to bring a muzzle. The same section mixes service-dog wording with pet-style container, weight and quota limits. Do not apply those pet limits as a universal service-dog ceiling; obtain route-specific accommodation confirmation.

Outside US-covered flights, the reviewed Ethiopian sources do not establish whether ADI or IGDF accreditation is required, whether a named alternative organization is accepted, or whether owner-trained dogs qualify. Ask about your dog’s actual training evidence before booking; a certificate or online registration is not a substitute for confirmed acceptance.

For a Canadian itinerary, use the Canadian Transportation Agency’s service-dog guidance when asking Ethiopian what training evidence and floor-space arrangements it will accept. Do not assume that US paperwork establishes Canadian eligibility.

8. Apply the US rules on covered flights

For US-covered travel, use our US service-dog rules and DOT paperwork and owner-training guidance.

Ask Ethiopian which documents to submit, through which channel, and how it will handle your particular connecting sectors. Its general assistance request is not a substitute for that answer.

9. Confirm the airport and onboard arrangements

Review our airport-day guidance and onboard service-dog guidance. Before booking, settle the number of dogs, required floor space, leash or harness, muzzle arrangements, trained public behaviour, animal-transport fees, any extra-seat charge and what happens if the planned seating is unsuitable.

For owner-trained teams, ask for the US-covered and non-US sectors to be assessed separately. Do not assume a document accepted on one leg establishes eligibility on the rest of the itinerary.

10. Treat entry and quarantine as a separate checklist

Airline acceptance, service-dog status and a passenger ticket do not establish import or transit permission. Check the responsible authorities for every country and airport, including identification, vaccination timing, certificates, permits, inspection reservations and any quarantine. This guide does not establish a worldwide quarantine exemption or destination-specific entry approval.

For US entry, start with our government-entry guidance and the current CDC checklist. Confirm the requirements for this dog’s history and itinerary.

11. Before committing to travel

Request a written answer identifying each animal, container, operating flight and travel mode. Resolve the contradictory limits, actual space, training evidence, fees, booking deadlines, check-in or cargo handover, route restrictions and government paperwork. Recheck if the aircraft, operating carrier, route or animal details change.
