PETS DELIVERY EXPERT

Flying with a pet
on Etihad Airways.

Check the animal, its container and every operating flight before committing to the journey.

Independent planning guidance for dogs and cats on Etihad Airways, with separate cargo and genuine assistance-dog sections. This is not airline support, an affiliation claim or a booking confirmation.

1. Keep cabin, checked baggage and cargo distinct

Eligible dogs and cats can travel in Economy or Business on Etihad-operated flights to/from Abu Dhabi. Falcons and trained service dogs have separate rules.

The airline’s agent policy distinguishes checked falcons from other ordinary pets, which need manifested cargo if they cannot use the cabin. Do not buy an excess-baggage allowance expecting it to cover a large dog.

2. Check the animal and the carrier together

Pets must be at least 16 weeks old; the animal plus carrier must weigh no more than 8 kg. The accompanying passenger must be at least 18. Pregnancy excludes travel.

The booking PDF gives 40 × 40 × 22 cm for Economy under-seat stowage and 50 × 43 × 50 cm for a purchased adjacent seat. An extra seat increases the available container size, not the animal’s weight allowance.

Allow natural standing, turning and lying space; the current page specifies leak/escape protection and ventilation on three sides covering at least 16%.

Measure before selecting a seat. Photograph the pet standing inside the carrier so an assessment can consider its actual posture.

3. Use the advance approval process

The FAQ says to submit the booking form at least seven days ahead and email documents no later than 72 hours before departure. Business needs an extra seat; check availability before buying the passenger itinerary.

Use the live form and ask which document-submission channel applies. The downloadable PDF gives a different email from the FAQ and also mentions First, while the current passenger FAQ restricts ordinary pets to Economy and Business. Do not treat the older form wording as First-class approval.

4. Check direction-specific exclusions and breeds

The current pet list excludes flights to the USA and to London/Manchester, with additional destination restrictions. It also lists prohibited dog breeds and crosses. Read the full route and breed lists before booking.

The agent policy additionally lists Kochi among restricted pet routes and a 6 kg animal-plus-carrier ceiling for Bahrain. Its route list differs from the passenger page: obtain written acceptance rather than assuming an omission permits travel.

Check both directions and each connection. A country name alone is not precise enough; give the airline airport codes and operating flights.

Etihad says it cannot carry an ordinary pet when the itinerary includes a connecting flight operated by another airline.

5. Build an arrival-document checklist

For Abu Dhabi arrivals, Etihad lists a release permit, health certificate and Customs Bill of Entry. Its passenger page and the Hub’s “Pets in Cabin” booking section give a five-day health-certificate signing/stamping window; another “Animals and pets” Hub passage gives 24 hours for UAE arrivals, excluding airside transfers at Abu Dhabi. Ask Etihad to resolve the applicable timing before arranging the appointment.

The linked veterinary certificate contains identification, vaccination and official veterinary attestations. Have the veterinarian and relevant authority identify the correct pathway before scheduling tests or issuing certificates. Airline acceptance does not substitute for government permission.

Ask who issues each document, its validity period, whether originals are required, and how arrival clearance will be handled. Keep document deadlines separate from the pet reservation deadline.

6. Confirm the localized fee and every segment

The global page lists USD 399 per flight, plus an extra seat in Business. The Canadian page contains conflicting tables: USD 399 per flight near the top and CAD 2,175 each way farther down, with the extra Business seat additional. Obtain an itinerary-specific written quote rather than treating either Canadian-page table as settled.

Ask for the total including connections, extra seating, import/clearance charges and any changes. A published airline fee is not a Pets Delivery Expert service quote. Request the pet-fee refund conditions before payment.

7. Ask Etihad Cargo for a separate assessment

Etihad Cargo’s LiveAnimals service offers animal freight with climate-controlled, pressurised transport and specialist handling. Arrange its own shipment acceptance and terminal handover; a passenger cabin request does not reserve cargo capacity.

Its November 2024 announcement extends cat/dog transport to 24 hours from origin acceptance to scheduled final arrival. It describes a 1 November–1 March short-nosed-breed window, requiring extra checks, documentation and specialist approval. This is a dated cargo announcement, not a blanket current booking guarantee. Reconfirm its application to the proposed journey.

Ask the cargo team about breed eligibility, loaded crate size, temperatures, connections, receiving-agent arrangements and the quotation’s exclusions.

Trained service dogs: scope each flight separately

Etihad requests service-dog registration at least 48 hours ahead. Ordinary pet restrictions should not be applied automatically to a qualifying assistance dog.

The FAQ requires ADI/IGDF-accredited evidence outside its U.S. exception. It says psychiatric support dogs may travel only directly from the U.S.; the detailed policy says psychiatric service dogs on direct flights to/from the U.S. Obtain clarification for the exact sector.

U.S. DOT rules distinguish trained disability-related tasks, including psychiatric tasks, from emotional support or companionship. For U.S.-covered travel, the airline may request DOT health/training/behaviour paperwork and a relief attestation on flights of eight hours or longer. An ordinary-pet breed exclusion does not replace the required individualized threat assessment.

Government entry rules still apply. Ask the accessibility team to confirm the route, required evidence and safe cabin accommodation, including all connections. Do not buy a certificate as a substitute for actual task training.

Prepare a route review

Send your departure and arrival cities, proposed dates and operating flights, plus your pet’s breed, age, weight and measurements. Include the carrier’s external dimensions and loaded weight, who will accompany the animal, and any existing airline confirmation.

Keep a separate checklist for airline acceptance, veterinary preparation, government entry and transit rules, and the arrival handover. Confirm who will collect the animal and where before departure.

Request a route and quote, or explore dog transport, cat transport and travel without the owner.

Questions before you book

Does buying another seat solve every carrier problem?

No. Send the loaded weight, animal measurements and proposed container dimensions for approval before paying for the seat. A larger space does not establish the animal’s eligibility.

Should I use an old pet-policy article to budget?

Use the airline’s current localized information and obtain a written itinerary-specific quote. Ask whether all segments and any extra seat are included.
