PETS DELIVERY EXPERT

Flying with a pet
on EVA Air.

Dogs, cats and rabbits can travel as checked pets on eligible flights. Confirm the aircraft, pet space and the fee rules for your ticket date.

Independent planning for direct accompanied journeys. Ordinary pets travel in the hold; service dogs and separate cargo have their own arrangements.

Start with the flight and service

EVA Air accepts accompanied dogs, cats and rabbits as checked pets on eligible international flights operated by EVA Air or UNI Air. Ordinary pets do not travel in the passenger cabin. Trained service dogs have a separate policy.

This guide covers direct accompanied journeys. Checked-pet travel, often called AVIH, uses the aircraft’s cargo compartment but is booked with the passenger journey. A separate air-cargo shipment has its own approval and quotation. Airline acceptance and government entry permission are separate checks.

Request pet space at least 48 hours ahead

Contact EVA Air’s Customer Service Center at least 48 hours before departure. Use its official contact directory to find the relevant office. No self-service online pet-request route was verified in the current official instructions. Ask for acceptance of your exact flight, animal and carrier before committing to travel; a passenger ticket alone does not establish pet-space approval.

Have the species, breed or mix, age, animal weight, combined pet-and-cage weight and all three exterior cage measurements ready. Tell EVA if you want to bring more than one pet. The published notice requirement is not a promise that a last-minute request will be accepted.

Keep the three pet limits separate

One pet may occupy each carrier. A passenger occupying a seat may check up to two cages; this allowance does not apply to an unaccompanied minor. Stricter applicable destination limits can reduce that allowance.

The general aircraft allocation is five cages per flight, with important exceptions. A321 flights do not accept checked pets. Boeing 787 short-haul flights allow two cages per flight; Boeing 787 long-haul flights, including Europe, North America and Oceania, do not accept them. Other route or aircraft restrictions may apply.

These are carrier counts for the checked-pet product. Confirm remaining space for your flight. No public EVA rule settling mixed-species placement was verified, so ask specifically if the request involves dogs, cats or rabbits travelling together.

Check age, breed and seasonal restrictions

Pets must be at least four months old and must not be pregnant. Health and safety suitability is checked by the airline, and destination requirements can require an older animal.

EVA applies seasonal bans to its listed short-nosed dogs and cats and their mixes: April 1–November 30 at Northern Hemisphere points and October 1–March 31 at Southern Hemisphere points. Its year-round country list names Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. For direct travel to or from those countries, ask EVA to confirm the breed restriction before making plans.

The affected dogs include Pugs, Bulldogs, Boxers, Boston Terriers, Chow Chows, Pekingese, Shih Tzus, Lhasa Apsos, mastiffs, Bull Terriers and several other named breeds. Affected cats include British Shorthair, Burmese, Himalayan, Scottish Fold, Persian and Exotic Shorthair. Check the full official list and disclose any mix.

A separate year-round exclusion covers listed dangerous dog breeds and their crosses, including pit bull types, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino and Cane Corso. Some English breed labels on the page are unclear, so obtain a breed-specific answer from EVA. No universal numerical hot- or cold-weather cutoff was verified.

Choose a compliant rigid carrier

Use a rigid-plastic carrier with one entry/exit door, adequate ventilation on more than one side and an absorbent floor lining. It must contain the animal securely and prevent claws from protruding. EVA excludes fully mesh, wicker, cardboard or collapsible carriers and carriers with two entry/exit doors.

Remove wheels. Secure the four sides of the door with zip ties or use the airline’s specified external protective net or straps. Attach suitable food and water receptacles securely and provide enough supplies. Review EVA’s illustrations and current declaration before purchasing a carrier.

The pet must stand without touching the roof, turn while standing, sit upright and lie naturally. EVA’s sizing method adds half the floor-to-elbow height to nose-to-tail-root length, and requires width of twice the shoulder width. A retail “airline approved” label is not flight approval.

The standard weight limit is 45 kg including the cage. EVA publishes a cage-size threshold of 292 cm (115 in), but its pet page does not explicitly define how this measurement is calculated. Confirm how EVA measures the threshold and provide all exterior dimensions for the actual aircraft. The page has a discretionary exception for EVA-approved weights above 45 kg, with extra charges. Do not rely on it without explicit approval. No equivalent pet-specific exception above the cage-size threshold was verified.

EVA describes the pet compartment as having the same pressure and temperature as the passenger cabin.

Calculate the pet fee using both ticket and travel dates

Pets and their cages are charged separately from the passenger’s free baggage allowance. For the new policy applying from September 29, 2026, the combined weight determines the number of excess-baggage units: up to 23 kg costs two units; over 23 kg up to 32 kg costs three; over 32 kg up to 45 kg costs four. Accepted cages have no additional oversize charge.

The transition matters. If the ticket was issued or reissued on or before September 28, 2026 and travel is between September 29, 2026 and March 31, 2027 inclusive, EVA specifies the original weight/size policy with the new unit rate. The old pet bands are two units up to 32 kg and four above 32 kg, subject to acceptance limits. Confirm the resulting unit count with EVA for an older ticket. Tickets issued or reissued from September 29 use the new policy; after March 31, 2027 the new policy also applies to older tickets.

The monetary rate depends on the route. Current examples for the new bands are USD 320 / 480 / 640 between Taiwan and Japan, USD 480 / 720 / 960 between Taiwan and Los Angeles, and CAD 680 / 1,020 / 1,360 from Vancouver to Taiwan. The three figures correspond to the up-to-23, over-23-to-32 and over-32-to-45 kg bands. These are calculated from EVA’s October 14, 2026 base-rate table, and apply only if the exact flight accepts the pet; the B787 long-haul exclusion still applies.

Canada departures use CAD; other departures use USD or the local equivalent. Pets are excluded from the prepaid excess-baggage service and its 10% discount, and are processed at the airport at standard fees. Ask for the final price and any change or cancellation conditions. For specially approved weights above 45 kg, EVA adds one unit for each additional 10 kg or part thereof; obtain a complete quotation.

Check direction-specific airline restrictions

EVA’s published checked-pet service does not accept pets on flights entering Hong Kong, Brisbane or the United Kingdom. It permits travel in the outbound direction subject to the remaining conditions. These are the airline’s published service restrictions, not a complete statement of each country’s import law.

An allowed direction or aircraft does not override a breed embargo, space limit or government requirement. Confirm the exact operating flight and date.

Prepare the documents and airport handover

Prepare valid health and vaccination certificates and whatever export and destination paperwork the relevant authorities require. Confirm the current requirements directly with those authorities; airline approval does not replace entry permission.

Download EVA’s current Passenger’s Declaration for Live Animal, complete two copies and present them when checking in the pet. Use the form linked from EVA’s pet page or downloads page, as old filenames can point to a newer edition.

Check in at the counter two hours before departure. At London Heathrow, EVA says the check-in procedures must be completed two and a half hours before departure. Confirm the station’s reporting location and allow enough time for document and carrier checks.

Ask the arrival station where the animal is handed over and what must be completed before release. No universal collection counter or release time is published in the reviewed pet material.

Service dogs follow a separate cabin policy

Fully trained service dogs, including psychiatric service dogs, may qualify for cabin travel without a pet charge. They must be at least four months old and individually trained to help a person with a disability. Emotional-support animals are treated as pets under the checked-pet policy.

Submit the required forms to EVA’s Reservations Office at least 48 hours before the flight and obtain document approval. EVA requires the DOT Service Animal Air Transportation Form for US travel and the Relief Attestation for flights of eight hours or more to or from the United States.

The dog must meet health and behaviour requirements, remain harnessed, leashed or tethered, and fit on the handler’s lap or in their foot space. It cannot occupy a seat, block an aisle or sit in an exit row. EVA asks the handler to carry a spare dog mask. Confirm destination and flight-specific acceptance separately.

Get a separate answer for cargo and unusual cases

EVA’s cargo service has separate live-animal handling information. This guide does not establish freight availability, a consumer booking channel or a universal cargo price. Ask EVA Cargo for an animal- and route-specific acceptance decision and quotation. The accompanied-pet two-cage allowance, standard 45 kg threshold and excess-baggage fee calculation must not be applied automatically to cargo.

Before paying, get confirmation of the flight and aircraft, space, breed and age, loaded weight, carrier dimensions, exact charge, reporting time, required documents and arrival handover. Also ask how a flight change affects the pet approval and fees; a complete pet-specific voluntary-refund schedule was not verified.
