Flying with a pet
on LATAM Airlines.

Confirm the animal, container, operating airline and every flight before committing to a journey.

Independent planning guidance for dogs and cats on LATAM Airlines, with separate cargo and genuine disability-trained assistance-dog sections. This is not airline support, an affiliation claim or a booking confirmation.

1. Identify the LATAM operating company

LATAM is a group brand. Its operator FAQ names LATAM Airlines Group, Chile, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador and Brazil. Record the company actually operating each leg, not just the flight number or ticket seller. This group-level guide is not a separate acceptance decision from each affiliate.

For ordinary pets, LATAM’s FAQ limits the service to exclusively LATAM-operated travel without other-airline connections or codeshares.

2. Cabin eligibility and natural fit

Dogs and cats may use Economy or Premium Economy. Rigid carriers: 36 × 33 × 19 cm; soft bags: 40 × 28 × 25 cm (length × width × height). The animal stays enclosed and must stand and turn without touching the ceiling or walls.

Minimum age is 16 weeks, or six months for U.S. routes. Sedated, pregnant or recently postpartum animals are excluded.

3. Book the animal and price every leg

The FAQ allows cabin requests until four hours before departure and hold requests until 48 hours before. Brazil domestic hold requests have a 60-day advance-booking limit. Space remains subject to confirmation; apply earlier rather than using the deadline as a target.

Ask for the pet-service price by route, loaded weight, tax and connection. Keep the animal confirmation alongside the passenger booking, and reconfirm both after any change.

4. Use the most restrictive hold limit

On A319/A320/A321, combined limits are 32 kg up to four hours and 23 kg for four–five hours; flights exceeding five hours are excluded. B767/B777/B787 allow up to 45 kg, reduced to 32 kg on flights to, from or connecting via Europe, Argentina or Venezuela. Mixed-aircraft trips follow the stricter condition.

Rigid crate: maximum 300 cm summed dimensions, 115 cm height, and 5 cm head clearance. The Spanish policy requires weaning at least five days before departure and two door-mounted food/water bowls. It excludes modified crates and sets a maximum of one connection with a wait under seven hours.

5. Review breeds, weather and domestic Brazil

Listed dangerous and brachycephalic breeds cannot use ordinary hold carriage. The FAQ flags SCL–GYE hold service as suspended.

The hold page lists a December 15–April 15 New York/Boston temperature restriction. The Spanish hold policy excludes domestic-Brazil flights departing or arriving from 10:01 to 15:59, including itineraries connecting with a domestic Brazil sector, and lists no hold-pet service on domestic Embraer flights. Confirm local flight times and aircraft. Domestic Brazil also requires operational assessment even after confirmation. Obtain the veterinary health certificate within the stated ten-day hold window, alongside government documents; carry the original and a copy. Fees vary by market and loaded weight.

6. Do not assume cargo fixes a hold refusal

LATAM Cargo is separately booked and assessed. Its live-animal policy requires dogs and cats to be at least 16 weeks old, excludes brachycephalic breeds and crosses, and excludes pregnancy, recent birth within seven days and unweaned offspring. Potentially dangerous breeds need separate crate review.

The passenger page’s suggestion to explore cargo is therefore not proof that a prohibited breed will be accepted. Cargo approval depends on the aircraft, route, timing and available capacity and may change if operating conditions change. Confirm the shipment before relying on a matching passenger flight.

International pet cargo reservations must be made through a certified freight forwarder; confirm the origin station’s process before arranging handover.

Cargo’s live-animal page lists a separate cold-weather restriction for travel to or from New York or Boston from December 15 through April 25. The passenger-hold page ends its restriction on April 15; confirm the date for the actual transport service.

7. Disability-trained service dogs

For U.S.-related journeys, LATAM recognises dogs trained for disability-related tasks, including psychiatric tasks, and requests the DOT transport form. Under U.S. DOT rules, a relief attestation may be required for individual flight segments scheduled for eight hours or more. Submit through its Help Center preferably 48 hours ahead and bring the forms to boarding.

For other routes, LATAM’s dedicated FAQ requires a qualifying trained dog at least 16 weeks old, recognised training evidence identifying the dog and handler, and its signed service-dog transport form. The dog stays controlled at the handler’s feet. Local restrictions still apply; the FAQ excludes animal transport to/from Aruba and the Galápagos. Obtain a route-specific accessibility decision rather than applying ordinary-pet breed rules to a genuine service dog.

8. Emotional support is a different process

LATAM has a separate, route-limited emotional-support category. Current Spanish guidance includes Argentina, Colombia and Mexico routes, with different coverage by country; Mexican domestic segments sold by LATAM are Aeroméxico-operated and require both airlines to be contacted. The April 2025 form also includes Argentina.

Use the current form for the itinerary and confirm acceptance rather than reusing an older download. The request needs at least 48 hours, and the form makes airport acceptance conditional. This category is not a way to declare an ordinary pet a disability-task-trained service dog.

9. Documents and source limitations

The dedicated English cabin and hold pages returned no readable policy text during this review. This guide uses the readable FAQ and official Spanish hold text, whose connection wording is stricter than the FAQ at exactly seven hours. Plan below that boundary and get confirmation. U.S. entry rules must also be checked directly with CDC; airline summaries are not the final import decision.

Prepare a route review

Send your departure and arrival cities, dates and operating flights, plus your pet’s breed, age, weight and measurements. Include the carrier’s external dimensions and loaded weight, who will accompany the animal, and any existing airline confirmation.

Keep separate checklists for airline acceptance, veterinary preparation, government entry and transit rules, and arrival handover. Ask who receives the animal if a flight changes or an inspection takes longer than expected.

Official sources and scope

Official sources checked 11 October 2026. Availability, documents, charges and acceptance require confirmation for the actual journey. Dedicated English cabin/hold pages were unreadable; official FAQ and Spanish indexed hold text used. Connection wording differs at exactly seven hours. Cargo brachycephalic restrictions override any assumption created by the passenger page’s cargo referral. Use the current emotional-support form and confirm the actual route.
