Choose checked-pet travel or separate cargo

Ordinary pets cannot travel in the Malaysia Airlines passenger cabin. With advance airline permission, eligible animals can travel as checked excess baggage in the hold. The conditions of carriage identify dogs, cats, household birds and other pets, but this is not automatic acceptance of every species or flight.

Checked-pet travel accompanies the passenger booking. A cargo shipment arranged through a pet shipper or forwarding agent is a separate service, even when it uses space on a passenger aircraft. MASkargo has its own acceptance, documents, handling and quotation. Guide dogs have separate arrangements under the airline’s regulations; ordinary-pet rules do not establish service-dog eligibility.

Call when buying the ticket; pay at the airport

For a pet travelling as excess baggage, Malaysia Airlines instructs passengers to inform its call centre at the time of ticket purchase. Ask for approval of the actual flight, animal and kennel before relying on the booking. A passenger ticket alone does not confirm a pet space. No universal 48-hour or 72-hour pet-request deadline was verified in the current official instructions.

Give the airline the species, breed or mix, age, animal weight, loaded kennel weight and all three exterior kennel measurements. Ask it to confirm aircraft acceptance, available pet space and the airport reporting time. These details help obtain an exact acceptance decision; they are not a substitute for it.

If the animal is booked as checked baggage, the passenger may check in online or by mobile, but must still go to the airport check-in counter to pay the pet charge. The pet-specific FAQ does not promise a self-service online pet booking or advance pet payment. Separate cargo follows cargo handling and payment arrangements.

Check the baggage threshold and flight space separately

The airline’s April 2, 2026 live-animal FAQ excludes animals over 32 kg (70 lb) or 204 cm (80 in) in total dimensions from baggage and directs passengers to MASkargo or freight arrangements. That FAQ does not explicitly say whether the 32 kg includes the kennel, or define its total-dimensions measurement. Provide both animal-only and loaded weights and all three exterior dimensions, and obtain an explicit answer before buying a carrier.

Being within a weight or size threshold does not guarantee acceptance. The current customer-facing pages reviewed do not establish a universal number of pets per flight, pets per passenger or animals per kennel. Ask for each limit separately and confirm remaining space. No public current rule settling antagonistic or mixed-species placement was verified; disclose every species if travelling with several animals.

Check the breed before making plans

Malaysia Airlines’ age-and-breed FAQ says it does not accept certain dog breeds, including snub-nosed or brachycephalic breeds, for health and safety reasons. It explicitly excludes weaned puppies younger than eight weeks; that wording does not establish acceptance of unweaned puppies. The page sits under Cargo Services and uses airline-wide wording: do not assume checked baggage provides an exception.

A complete current carrier-specific breed list, a minimum age for kittens and numeric temperature thresholds were not verified. Ask the airline to assess the exact breed or mix, health, age, destination and weather. MASkargo separately warns that species, breed and temperature restrictions can affect its service. A breed permitted by the destination is not necessarily accepted by the airline.

Prepare a secure, correctly sized kennel

The airline’s kennel FAQ, published under Cargo Services, requires compliance with the latest IATA Live Animals Regulations. Confirm the requirements for an accompanied checked-pet booking with the airline rather than assuming every cargo detail applies unchanged. The animal needs room to sit, stand, turn and lie naturally. The published ventilation requirement is at least 16% of the combined surface area of the four sides.

The kennel must be sturdy, clean, escape-proof and leak-proof, with handholds or lifting arrangements that protect handlers. Provide adequate absorbent bedding; straw is prohibited. Include suitable feeding and watering facilities. Confirm the kennel against the actual aircraft and service rather than relying on a retailer’s “airline approved” label.

Budget using the pet-specific fee rule

Checked pets do not use the passenger’s free baggage allowance. Under Article 9.11, the animal, container and carried food are excess baggage. The pet-in-hold FAQ, dated June 30, 2024 and checked October 14, 2026, applies the normal excess-baggage rate for the weight and zone travelled, with a minimum charge equivalent to 5 kg.

Request a dated quotation in the payment currency for the exact direct flight and loaded kennel. This guide does not publish a flat worldwide price: a complete current monetary table for pet calculations was not verified. Ask about any taxes, final chargeable weight and how a flight change or pet refusal affects payment.

The general extra-baggage page advertises an advance-purchase discount, but the pet-specific instructions say to pay at the airport. Do not treat a general baggage purchase or discount as a pet reservation or a confirmed discounted pet fee. Cargo is quoted separately according to destination, animal size and handling; request that quotation from the appointed pet shipper or authorised forwarding agent.

Confirm documents and the correct handover point

The conditions require the relevant health and vaccination certificates, entry permits and other required documents, in addition to a suitable crate and advance permission. Requirements depend on the animal and destination. Confirm the document list with the airline and the relevant authorities well before departure.

For accompanied checked pets, confirm the passenger-airport reporting time and complete counter checks and payment. A current pet-specific universal check-in lead time was not verified.

For cargo handled through the MASkargo Animal Hotel, the airline’s cargo FAQ says submission must be through a pet shipper or authorised forwarding agent at least eight hours before scheduled departure. This is the Animal Hotel cargo instruction, not a universal eight-hour passenger check-in rule. Confirm the applicable cargo station, handover point and cut-off with the shipper.

Get the unresolved details in writing

Before committing, obtain confirmation of the operating flight and aircraft, service type, species and breed acceptance, age, kennel measurements, weight interpretation, flightwide capacity, passenger and kennel limits, any mixed-species restrictions, documents, fee and handover time.

No complete current list of checked-pet route exclusions or a complete pet-specific refund schedule was verified in this review. Ask specifically about the direction of travel and any seasonal or aircraft restriction. Separate cargo availability is not guaranteed by a checked-pet refusal or an oversized-kennel referral.
