A selected domestic route expansion
Virgin Australia has announced that eligible small dogs and cats can join owners in the cabin on selected flights between Cairns and Melbourne from 22 October 2026, in both directions. The expansion was announced in its September newsroom.
The announcement’s official newsroom path identifies September 2026; an exact publication day was not shown.

Confirm the flight and pet space
Pet space must be booked through the airline’s Guest Contact Centre more than 72 hours before travel. The current programme limits the combined pet-and-carrier weight to 8 kg and requires the animal to remain in an approved closed carrier during the flight. Confirm the actual flight and acceptance before buying travel: this is a selected domestic service, not permission for international arrivals or every Virgin Australia route. Assistance animals follow separate conditions.
