PETS DELIVERY EXPERT

Flying with a pet
on Hong Kong Airlines.

Start with the direction of travel. A workable outward cabin journey can still leave a very different return arrangement to solve.

An independent commercial planning guide from Pets Delivery Expert. We are not the airline’s customer service desk. Airline acceptance, government entry permission and space for the exact flight each require confirmation. Genuine assistance dogs follow a separate process.

1. Map the outward and return journeys separately

Hong Kong Airlines publishes a cabin option for ordinary dogs and cats departing Hong Kong for Tokyo Narita (NRT), Osaka Kansai (KIX) or Nagoya (NGO). It excludes brachycephalic dogs and cats. Ordinary pets entering Hong Kong must travel as manifest cargo, rather than cabin or checked baggage.

For a holiday, relocation or family visit, put both directions into the first planning enquiry. Specify airport codes: a city name alone can hide an airport mismatch. Keep the passenger itinerary and proposed pet movement together so that a return problem is visible before a non-refundable ticket is purchased.

2. Ask for acceptance and the correct booking channel

The pet page directs passengers to the airline’s customer service centre at least seven days before departure to confirm acceptance. Ask the centre which booking channel and confirmation process apply to your cabin request. This contact direction does not establish that every customer-service channel can complete the cabin booking.

Prepare a short enquiry with the flight number, date, direction, breed, age, pet weight and fully loaded carrier measurements. Ask what evidence will show that the animal has been accepted on the reservation, which documents remain outstanding, and when payment becomes due. Save the reply alongside your ticket.

Resolve two published discrepancies before committing: the July 2025 general conditions retain broad ordinary-pet no-cabin wording, while the specific pet page and cabin form describe the limited option. An older international tariff also says seven working days. Allow extra lead time and have the airline confirm the applicable terms and cutoff; this guide does not declare either document legally superseded.

3. Check comfortable fit as well as the scales

The cabin form permits one pet, up to 8 kg including its carrier. Maximum carrier dimensions are 45 cm long × 37 cm wide × 21 cm high. It must fit under the seat without compression, be leak-proof and escape-proof, and allow natural sitting, standing, turning and lying. The animal stays inside throughout the journey and wears a pet nappy throughout the flight.

The English form requires a healthy, non-pregnant animal over eight weeks old. Its English-prevails clause resolves the different Chinese minimum-age wording. Sign and submit the form when making the reservation, then present it at airport check-in.

For your own fit check, photograph the animal naturally positioned inside the carrier. Record the carrier’s external measurements and weigh the complete travel setup, including the bedding you intend to use. A soft bag advertised for another airline may be unsuitable here. Use our carrier preparation guide to organise the assessment, then obtain the airline’s decision on the actual bag.

4. Keep checked-hold approval separate

The airline also describes checked-hold carriage on departures from Hong Kong, with aircraft-specific limits. That aircraft table concerns hold carriage; it does not establish cabin-pet availability.

If considering this mode for an eligible animal, request a separate assessment of the exact operating flight, aircraft configuration, crate and loaded weight. Ask how an aircraft change would affect acceptance and who would notify you. Do not carry a cabin-bag assumption into a hold-crate decision. A larger container needs its own acceptance, even when the passenger ticket is unchanged.

5. Build a distinct Hong Kong arrival plan

For inbound cargo enquiries, Hong Kong Airlines links to Hong Kong Air Cargo sales offices. That referral is a starting point for an individual shipment assessment, not proof of animal capacity on your chosen passenger flight.

Ask the cargo booking party to identify the operator, routing, origin handover point, arrival handling party and collection process. Request a written list of what you must supply and what the provider will arrange. Include the plan for delays, an overnight hold or a missed collection appointment. Treat a cargo quotation and your own passenger reservation as two items to reconcile.

For a round trip, cost and document the return before paying for the outward journey. Changing transport mode can change who takes custody of the pet and where you meet it after arrival.

6. Obtain a mode-specific quotation

We have not verified a public cabin price with a sufficiently clear route and charging unit to reproduce here. Request the total payable for your exact arrangement, the currency, whether it covers one direction, and which charges are paid to the airline or another provider.

For a managed move, compare the same scope in each proposal: transport, carrier, veterinary appointments, official documents, origin handling, arrival release and onward delivery. Ask about excluded costs and the consequences if the airline rejects the carrier or changes the flight. A passenger baggage-price table alone is not a complete pet-travel budget.

7. Run the entry plan alongside the airline request

Use our Japan guide as the starting point for a Japan document timeline. Review the pet’s travel history and intended arrival date before settling the itinerary. Have the relevant authorities confirm the documents and procedures for the actual origin, destination and any transit.

For a return to Hong Kong, establish the import and release plan independently of the passenger ticket. Keep separate records of airline acceptance, government documents and the handling arrangements. A form signed for carriage does not, by itself, resolve permission to enter a country. This airline guide does not repeat or freshly certify the complete entry rules.

8. Genuine service dogs need their own assessment

Article 8.9.4 of the July 2025 conditions describes service dogs accompanying passengers with disabilities as a separate category, with carriage without charge subject to airline conditions and applicable law. Ask the assistance team for the eligibility, training evidence, cabin arrangements and destination process for the precise journey.

The general assistance page asks for contact 48–72 hours ahead; this is separate from the ordinary-pet request above. We have not established a complete destination-specific service-dog checklist in this review. Do not treat an emotional-support description, a purchased vest or a certificate as a way to turn an ordinary pet booking into an assistance booking.

Arrange a managed journey with Pets Delivery Expert

For a managed journey, start with your route, preferred dates, and your pet’s breed, age and weight. Include any existing carrier details or airline confirmation if available.

Pets Delivery Expert develops individual, complete pet-transport arrangements, subject to actual airline acceptance and the relevant authorities’ approvals. Request a route review.

For brachycephalic dogs, our service is cabin-only, through individually assessed commercial-flight or private-flight arrangements. Hong Kong Airlines’ exclusion remains an exclusion; we do not offer an airline exemption or an assistance-dog workaround.

Questions before you book

Can my pet fly back to Hong Kong in the same cabin carrier?

The ordinary-pet cabin option is outward only. Plan the return as a separate manifest-cargo movement before paying for the trip.

My dog fits the weight limit. Is that enough?

No. Comfortable natural movement and an uncompressed under-seat fit also matter. Send the airline the actual carrier measurements and fit photographs for assessment.

Does contacting Pets Delivery Expert reserve airline space?

No. Our enquiry begins an independent planning assessment. Obtain explicit airline acceptance for the flight and a separate confirmation of the required government and handling arrangements.
