PETS DELIVERY EXPERT

Flying with a pet
on Qatar Airways.

Begin with the travel format. A passenger’s checked-pet reservation and a separate live-animal cargo shipment need different arrangements.

An independent Pets Delivery Expert planning guide for ordinary dogs and cats, with genuine assistance dogs discussed separately. It is not an airline booking confirmation or government entry approval. Check every operating flight and the latest official conditions before payment.

1. Ordinary pets: hold or separate cargo

Ordinary dogs and cats are planned as checked baggage in the hold or as cargo, not cabin pets. Qatar’s cabin exceptions for qualifying service dogs and falcons do not extend to ordinary cats or dogs.

The published checked-pet limits are 75 kg for the animal(s) and carrier combined and 300 cm for the carrier’s length + width + height. Larger shipments require cargo assessment; local limits can be stricter. Pets travelling to or from Australia or New Zealand use cargo. The same page assigns animals travelling alone to cargo but elsewhere allows checked pets on a separate flight. Have Qatar confirm the booking channel for an unaccompanied animal.

2. Start well before the minimum notice

The pet overview asks for contact at least 48 hours before departure. The request form instead displays a 24-hour submission cutoff. Use the earlier requirement; submission alone is not approval.

Keep the airline’s written acceptance with the passenger reservation. Before paying for a ticket, ask which flights and travel format it covers. A later flight or aircraft change deserves a fresh check.

3. Have connections checked as one journey

The overview rejects incoming pet transfers from other airlines. It allows onward arrangements with another carrier, but its cargo section broadly sends other-airline connections to cargo. Ask Qatar to resolve the precise transfer before booking.

Write out each flight number and operating airline rather than sending only the origin and destination. Ask where the animal is handed over, who manages the transfer, and whether collection and re-check are required.

4. Check the crate, not just the dimensions

Qatar’s preparation PDF specifies a secure, ventilated carrier with absorbent bedding and externally refillable food and water dishes. Wheels must be immobilised. Ventilation openings are limited to 25 × 25 mm for dogs and 19 × 19 mm for cats; larger openings need the PDF’s specified protective mesh. Review its construction details before modifying a crate.

Use the carrier guide to record the animal’s natural standing measurements and compare usable internal space with the manufacturer’s external dimensions. A suitable size is only one part of acceptance.

5. Breed, health and documents

Qatar requires a veterinarian’s fit-to-fly certificate issued within ten days before travel.

The request form’s acceptance checklist sets minimum ages for puppies and kittens of seven months for Doha destinations and 12 weeks elsewhere. These airline-form rules do not replace government age or import requirements.

The request form excludes snub-nosed dogs and selected other breeds from checked baggage. The linked breed FAQ did not expose its full list in the accessible page checked for this guide. Obtain written clearance for the exact breed and any mix; no breed list is inferred here, and cargo acceptance is not assumed.

The preparation PDF asks owners to check departure, transit and destination requirements and carry the relevant health, vaccination and permit documents. Plan those checks separately from the airline request.

6. Get the actual itinerary priced

Pet transport is charged separately from ordinary baggage allowance. Obtain the current route-and-weight quote.

Ask whether the quote covers each segment, transit care, terminal handling and any separate cargo charges. Keep a record of what changes or cancellation would cost before committing to the itinerary.

Service dogs and psychiatric service dogs

A genuine service dog performs trained tasks for a person with a disability. Psychiatric service dogs can qualify; emotional support or companionship alone does not. Buying a certificate or vest cannot substitute for the required task training.

Service-dog route and paperwork checks

Qatar’s current Conditions of Carriage, Article 18, includes psychiatric service dogs and allows up to two service dogs in the cabin on specified routes. It lists the USA, Canada, EU member states, UK, Switzerland, Brazil, Australia, India and Georgia. Other routes are assigned to checked-hold transport in that document.

The live request form differs: it displays one-dog limits outside the USA, additional Norway/Kuwait wording and a UK psychiatric-dog cargo restriction. Do not resolve this inconsistency by assuming the broader cabin allowance. Ask Qatar’s assistance team to confirm each segment, dog and document requirement in writing.

Article 18 generally specifies 48-hour notice and distinguishes U.S. documentation from other routes. Its non-U.S. psychiatric-dog provisions include further evidence requirements. Read the relevant clauses with the airline; the request form is not a complete statement of passenger rights.

U.S.-covered service-dog travel

For U.S.-covered flights, the DOT transportation form may be required. The relief attestation applies to segments scheduled for eight hours or more. Federal rules permit advance submission up to 48 hours for earlier bookings, with a departure-gate option for bookings made within 48 hours. Import requirements remain separate. Ask the airline to resolve any differing form instructions before travel.

Prepare a route review

Send the cities, dates, operating flights, whether the owner will accompany the animal, and the pet’s breed, age, weight and measurements. Add photographs of the carrier, its outside dimensions and loaded weight, plus any airline response already received.

Ask for a plan that identifies the booking channel, document deadlines, transfer arrangements and unresolved acceptance questions. Request a route review. For a separate shipment, also see travel without the owner.

Questions before you book

Does the falcon exception let a small dog travel in the cabin?

No. The falcon provision is a separate species-specific exception, not an ordinary-pet cabin service.

Is Qatar Airways Cargo a confirmed alternative if checked baggage is refused?

No. Ask the cargo service to assess the animal, route and container separately. The cargo product link alone does not confirm acceptance or available space.

Which service-dog source should I check?

Read Article 18 and the live request conditions together, then have the assistance team resolve any difference for the actual flights.
