PETS DELIVERY EXPERT

Flying with a pet
on Cathay Pacific.

Confirm how your pet will travel before committing to your passenger itinerary.

An independent commercial planning guide from Pets Delivery Expert. We arrange individual, complete pet journeys; we are not Cathay Pacific customer support. Airline acceptance, government permission and space for the actual shipment must be confirmed separately.

1. Start with a separate cargo arrangement

Cathay’s ordinary-pet cabin option is unavailable. Its baggage FAQ also says new checked-pet bookings are suspended until further notice and directs owners to Cathay Cargo. Qualifying assistance dogs have a separate process.

A cargo shipment needs its own acceptance and handover plan. Do not treat an extra-baggage purchase or your passenger reservation as the pet’s booking.

2. Identify who will make the cargo booking

Since September 1, 2025, direct pet bookings are restricted to IPATA or ATA members, IATA-accredited freight forwarders, or holders of a valid IATA Live Animals Regulations training certificate. Start with a suitable pet-travel agent or ask the local Cathay Cargo office about the applicable channel.

Cathay’s passenger page also says Hong Kong departures can be arranged through any agent. That wording does not remove the stated qualifications for the party booking directly. Ask who will submit and confirm the shipment.

Send the origin, destination, proposed dates, breed or mix, age, pet weight and crate measurements. Ask for the next steps and outstanding approvals before buying a non-refundable passenger ticket.

3. Confirm the actual transport route

Cathay’s acceptance checklist calls for advance arrangements with every participating carrier and flight details for the whole cargo routing. A Cathay-marketed passenger connection is not evidence that each operating airline has accepted the animal.

Ask the booking party: Which airline operates each sector? Is the pet’s flight the same as mine? Who takes custody during a transfer? Which terminal receives the crate, and when? What happens after a delay or aircraft change? Record the answers for both outward and return travel.

4. Separate Hong Kong arrival from transit

Arriving in Hong Kong: AFCD’s ordinary-pet air-arrival procedure requires a Special Permit in advance and manifest cargo, with an air waybill. Excess or hand-carried baggage is not accepted under that procedure. Arrange the receiving cargo terminal and notify AFCD of arrival details at least 24 hours ahead.

Use AFCD’s current origin-group instructions to establish the document and quarantine requirements. The pet’s history matters; an airline booking does not establish entry eligibility.

Connecting through Hong Kong: AFCD requires advance permission when transit involves changing aircraft. It states that no transit permit is needed if the animal stays on the same aircraft throughout. Ordinary transshipment must finish within 24 hours unless prior approval is granted. Confirm which arrangement actually applies.

Leaving Hong Kong is a different direction. Check the destination and any transit rules separately rather than applying the arrival procedure in reverse.

5. Check breed, direction and season together

Cathay publishes limited cargo acceptance for certain brachycephalic breeds in January–May and October–December. Hong Kong to Singapore is one listed direction. It does not establish approval for the return or an onward connection. The page separately says London Heathrow to Hong Kong is temporarily unavailable for these breeds.

These shipments require an IPATA BOAS-certified pet shipper. Breed eligibility, the individual animal and the complete route still need confirmation.

An older indexed Cathay embargo document describes broader exclusions, while the current policy and linked acceptance checklist recognize limited approvals. We could not establish a complete current embargo list from the available pages. Have the booking party obtain Cathay’s applicable written conditions; neither a broad ban nor automatic acceptance is justified by this review.

These are airline-policy facts. Pets Delivery Expert’s brachycephalic-dog service is cabin-only, through individually confirmed commercial-flight or private-flight arrangements. Cargo eligibility does not establish a cabin option.

6. Have the crate and paperwork assessed together

Cathay’s cargo guide requires an appropriately sized, rigid, ventilated container with leak-proof flooring. The animal needs room to stand naturally, turn and lie down. Have the booking party assess the actual crate before purchase; our carrier preparation guide helps organise measurements.

Use the applicable authorities’ requirements for the full route. Agree who obtains each document, what travels with the animal and what you retain. Veterinary documents, import permission and airline acceptance are separate checks.

Agree feeding, watering and delay care at booking. Cathay says these arrangements need to be requested and approved, with instructions included in the air waybill handling information.

7. Obtain a shipment quote and use the right support team

Cathay Cargo says cost varies with destination, animal size and type, and directs customers to the relevant agent. This guide gives no universal pet fee. Request a written total with currency, direction, included handling, arrival release, exclusions and cancellation terms.

For a genuine assistance dog, contact Cathay Customer Care early through the separate assistance-dog process. Confirm eligibility for the actual route. Hong Kong arrival or transit also needs the applicable AFCD permit and written cabin approval. Assistance status is not a booking workaround for an ordinary pet.

Questions before you book

Can my small dog or cat fly in the Cathay Pacific cabin?

Cathay does not offer ordinary-pet cabin travel. Qualifying assistance dogs use a separate process; a small carrier does not create an exception.

Can I add my pet as checked baggage?

The official FAQ says new checked-pet bookings are suspended until further notice. Ask about a separately accepted Cathay Cargo shipment before committing to your passenger itinerary.

Does a Hong Kong connection always need a transit permit?

AFCD distinguishes an aircraft change from transit that stays on the same aircraft throughout. Establish the pet’s actual routing and applicable permission before booking.

Official sources and scope

Official Cathay Pacific, Cathay Cargo and Hong Kong AFCD sources checked October 12, 2026, including Cathay’s Traditional Chinese policy. The cargo guide is dated July 31, 2025; its direct-booking rule took effect September 1, 2025. Review dates are not policy start dates. Some cargo accordions were readable only through the official page’s indexed text, and legacy cargo links were unreliable. The breed-list limitation is explained above. No live capacity, shipment quotation or individual acceptance was obtained. This is not a complete destination-entry or veterinary checklist.
